Experience
Michael Gu is an Associate in the Business Litigation, Insurance & Tort Litigation, and Professional Practices Groups. Michael focuses his practice on resolving complex civil litigation, personal injury, business disputes, insurance and tort litigation matters. His practice focuses on the defense of professionals such as architects and engineers of various disciplines, as well as the intellectual property law practice area. He has performed hundreds of contract reviews in a variety of contexts in the AEC sector and in intellectual property. He is a licensed Patent Attorney before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), and he has experience prosecuting both trademark (including trade dress) and patent applications before the USPTO. His experience in this area also includes both offensive and defensive claims of trademark and copyright infringement, as well as the defense of several patent infringement claims.
Prior to beginning his legal career, Michael was a geotechnical engineer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), New England District, where he performed numerous technical, contractual, and project management tasks for various projects. Technical tasks included the design of deep foundations for a large wharf structure, routine and emergency inspections of levees and dams, probabilistic risk assessments of levees and dams, geomechanics-based numerical modeling, and earthquake engineering. He was also the project manager and technical lead on two Corps-wide infrastructure management web applications developed with contractor support.
His experience as an engineer has provided him with unique and profound insights into the design and construction industry. Michael also previously worked as a Donovan Hatem law clerk, during which time he assisted with legal research and drafted memoranda related to depositions, trials and alternative dispute resolutions. He also previously interned at the Shanghai office of an international law firm.
